The Health Education Network (HEN) is proud to offer a simplified learning method for actual retention of Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) algorithms. The stable, critically ill, or full arrest patient can now be placed into the following care categories:  Stable, Unstable, Just Dead and Really Dead Algorithms. This ACLS PREP class is a great review for the experienced provider looking to recertify or a fantastic starting point for the initial ACLS student to build some solid, simplified ACLS concepts.

ACLS PREP Course

ACLS PREP is a great course to use for simplification and preparation to take an Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) class. This course was developed to provide the student with a simple method of redefining and retaining the very busy ACLS algorithms. The classification of these algorithms into a Stable, Unstable, Just Dead and Really Dead categories is a fantastic way to understand and learn the treatment of a critically ill or arresting patient in the hospital, ambulatory or clinical settings. All online content is based upon the most current, evidence-based guidelines and recommendations made by the  American Heart Association (AHA) and the International Liaison Committee of Resuscitation (ILCOR).

Pre-Test

Students initially complete a 5-question pretest which will establish their current basic knowledge of procedural sedation and analgesia ACLS and some practice ECG strips with treatment questions. There is no pass/ fail of the pretest, it is a tool to collect baseline data on the current level of sedation ACLS understanding and practice. Evidence-based feedback is provided upon completion of the pre-test.

Stable-Unstable-Just Dead-Really Dead-Return of Spontaneous Circulation (ROSC)

The ACLS PREP course includes a brief video lecture and division of the algorithms into the Stable, Unstable, Just Dead, and Really Dead categories of care. Monitor screens showing vital signs and live rhythms will occur throughout the program, in conjunction with static ECG rhythms for review and treatment.  Algorithms for the Stable, Unstable, Just Dead, and Really Dead protocols are available early in the program in PDF format to allow the student to print a follow a hard copy if desired.

ECG-Airway-Stroke-Acute Coronary Syndrome (ACS)

A robust and non-mandatory section for basic ECG review is included in the second section of the content. Airway skills, such as rescue breathing, NPA, and OPA measurement and insertion are all video-based demonstrations for accuracy of measurement recommendations. A very brief review of stroke and acute coronary syndromes is covered in this second section of the program.

Post Test

A short post test will be administered, but there is no pass/fail associated with this score. Evidence based feedback will be provided upon completion.

Educational Objectives

After completing this activity, the participant is better able to:

  • Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation: State compression rate, depth, and importance of the uninterrupted, high quality CPR for every pulseless arrest
  • Stable:  Identify 2 markers which would indicate the patient is stable
  • Unstable: Identify and treat a patient showing signs of instability
  • Pulseless: State the 1 major difference between “just dead” and “really dead”
  • Airway: Identify the recommended rate of rescue breathing and type of respiratory adjunct needed based on level of consciousness (LOC)
  • Return of Spontaneous Circulation (ROSC): State 3 considerations of care when ROSC is achieved
